Buffalo Sabres Continue Three-Goalie Rotation for Next Season

The Buffalo Sabres are set to continue their unique three-goalie rotation strategy moving forward into the next NHL season. This past season, the Sabres utilized Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Alex Lyon, and Colten Ellis, all of whom contributed significantly in net. Initially viewed with skepticism, the approach proved successful as all three goalies fostered a competitive environment that improved their individual performances. Head coach Lindy Ruff emphasized the benefits of this strategy, noting that the camaraderie among the goalies helped them push each other to excel throughout the grueling NHL season. General manager Jarmo Kekäläinen echoed these sentiments, highlighting the impressive statistics from Luukkonen, who achieved his best season yet in terms of save percentage and goals against average. The Sabres' decision to carry three goalies aligns with upcoming NHL rule changes regarding Emergency Back Up Goalies (EBUGs), allowing them to avoid the need for an inexperienced goalie should injuries occur. However, not all is well for Devon Levi, once seen as the future of the Sabres' goaltending, as he spent the entire season in Rochester and may be on the move this offseason.
